Start your career in healthcare

Pathways to Caring Careers helps local people from First Nations and multicultural communities take their first step towards a career in healthcare.

The program supports up to 20 participants to complete a Certificate II in Health Support Services, while providing the training, mentoring and practical support needed to move into work or continue studying.

Led by Regional Development Australia Townsville and North West Queensland (RDA TNWQ), the project has been co-designed in partnership with On Common Country (OCC), Townsville Multicultural Support Group (TMSG) and Mater Education.  Together, we’re helping more local people build the skills and confidence to work in one of North Queensland’s fastest-growing industries.

Why healthcare?

Healthcare workers are in high demand across North Queensland. Hospitals, aged care providers, disability services and community health organisations are all looking for people to join their teams.

This program helps participants gain the skills, experience and confidence they need to start a career in the health and care sector, while helping local employers meet growing workforce demand.

More than just a training course

Starting a new course can feel like a big step. That’s why participants receive support before, during and after their training.

The program includes:

  • Confidence-building activities before training begins
  • A personalised support plan
  • A Certificate II in Health Support Services delivered by Mater Education
  • Practical work placement opportunities within Mater Health Services
  • One-on-one mentoring throughout the program
  • Support with transport or childcare where needed
  • Help preparing for employment or further study after completing the course

By providing practical and personal support, the program helps participants stay on track, complete their training and take the next step towards employment.

Creating opportunities for our region

Pathways to Caring Careers benefits both participants and the wider community.

The program will:

  • Help more local people start careers in healthcare
  • Support employers looking for skilled workers
  • Create stronger pathways into employment and further training
  • Build a more diverse and inclusive health workforce
  • Strengthen partnerships between industry, education and community organisations

By investing in local people, we’re helping build the skilled workforce our region needs now and into the future.
