About our Region

RDA’s region incorporates the Northern and North West Statistical Divisions.

Townsville is the largest centre in the Northern Region, whilst Mount Isa is the largest centre in the North West Region.  Health care and social assistance (14.5%), pubic administration and safety (10.1%), and retail trade (8.5%) are the three largest sectors by employment. (Source: 2021 Census)

Townsville and north west QLD Economic Recovery and growth strategy 2020 – 2030

This Strategy has been developed by RDA in coordination with key economic development stakeholders. With a focus on job creation in the short term but also long term vision for sustainable jobs and broad economic and social benefits to be achieved across the region, this Strategy will be utilized to inform planning, investment and decision making.

The North West Regional Plan 2010-2031

Released by former Minister for Infrastructure and Planning, Stirling Hinchliffe in Mount Isa on 10 August 2010, the plan is the Queensland Government’s long-term strategy for shaping the region over the 20-year period to 2031. The plan will help create a diverse local economy, protect the region’s lifestyle and environment, inform the delivery of educational and training opportunities and support healthy and safe communities.

The North Queensland Regional Plan (NQ Regional Plan) is a 25-year strategic, statutory planning document for the local government areas of Burdekin, Charters Towers, Hinchinbrook, Palm Island and Townsville
