About our Region

RDA’s region incorporates the Northern and North West Statistical Divisions and Boulia Shire, covering just over one quarter of Queensland’s area. Townsville is the largest centre in the Northern Region, whilst Mount Isa is the largest centre in the North West Region. Mining and agricultural sectors employ 5.1% and 4.1% of the workforce respectively and are the largest export sectors. Health care and social assistance, pubic administration and safety, and retail trade are the three largest sectors by employment. (Source: 2016 Census)

The North West Regional Plan 2010-2031

Released by former Minister for Infrastructure and Planning, Stirling Hinchliffe in Mount Isa on 10 August 2010, the plan is the Queensland Government’s long-term strategy for shaping the region over the 20-year period to 2031. The plan will help create a diverse local economy, protect the region’s lifestyle and environment, inform the delivery of educational and training opportunities and support healthy and safe communities.
