Modern Manufacturing Initiative

In October 2020, the Australian Government announced a $1.3 billion the Modern Manufacturing Initiative (MMI).  The MMI will provide co‑funding for large manufacturing projects that have broad sectoral benefits across the National Manufacturing Priorities.  

Round 2 of MMI has been released with funding opportunities for the following streams/sectors.

·      Manufacturing Translation Stream – which helps Australian manufacturers translate high quality research and ideas into  commercial outcomes.

o   Resources Technology and Critical Minerals Processing

o   Medical Products Priority

o   Defence Priority

o   Space Priority

o   Recycling and Clean Energy

o   Food and Beverage Priority

·       Manufacturing Integration Stream – helps Australian manufacturers to access and propel their quality products and high value services into domestic and global supply chains.

o   Resources Technology and Critical Minerals Processing

o   Medical Products Priority

o   Defence Priority

o   Space Priority

o   Recycling and Clean Energy

o   Food and Beverage Priority

All streams will operate on a co-investment basis.  Round 2 of MMI has been released with funding opportunities for the following sectors. 

Resources Technology and Critical Minerals Processing will support a global centre for commercialising and  manufacturing cutting-edge technology products and services for the global resources sector that benefit a range of
other industries. 

Defence will support an Australian defence manufacturing base that delivers world-leading capabilities for the Australian Defence Force and is internationally competitive. This stronger manufacturing base will be enabled by a larger number of medium-sized defence businesses that can secure long-term supplier relationships, contribute to and sustain Defence  capability, and engage with small businesses.

Medical Products will support a globally recognised Australian medical products industry with the capability, capacity and expertise to locally manufacture advanced and high-value medical products using sophisticated processes.

Space will support a globally recognised Australian space sector with the capability, capacity and expertise to locally design, develop, manufacture and deploy specialised products, equipment, systems and services for exporting to international markets and to support national and international space missions.

Food and Beverage aims to double the value of Australia’s Food and Beverage manufacturing through a focus on smart food and beverage manufacturing; innovative foods and beverages; and food safety, origin and traceability system.

Recycling and Clean Energy will develop world-leading advanced manufacturers that seize opportunities from sustainability, the clean energy transition, and waste reduction demands by leveraging Australia’s advantages in innovation, technology, renewable and mineral resources, and our onshore industrial base.
