Recognising that some regions face challenges in terms of employment opportunities and growth, the Australian Government has introduced the Regional Employment Trials Program (RETP) in 10 disadvantaged regions. Although Regional Development Australia Townsville and North West Queensland (RDA) has already been a key facilitator in the active support and promotion of the RETP in its region, on 3 March 2020, RDA was successful in securing funding to participate and deliver the Building Jobs in Northern Queensland project.

The Building Jobs in Northern Queensland project aims to:

Support strong connections between regional stakeholders, including employment services providers

Improve awareness of local labour markets

Increase knowledge within the civil and commercial construction sectors of the pipeline of works

Improve employment outcomes in the targeted local government areas

We aim to engage and consult with key stakeholders in the civil and commercial construction sectors regarding projects in the pipeline, or have high potential, to move to construction in the next 18 months. Key stakeholders in the jobs pipeline will be brought together through consultations and online communications through a variety of channels. This will include HR Practitioners, training organisations and government service providers that will enhance the opportunities for future collaboration on developing a pipeline of skills for the Townsville, Charters Towers, Burdekin, Hinchinbrook and Mount Isa local government areas.

As part of this work RDA, has been collating information of civil and commercial construction projects in Townsville and North West QLD region. This information is based on information sourced from a variety of publicly available published information. We note that project information is frequently changing, and the following is only a guide to the civil and commercial construction projects in Northern Queensland.

*This report has been prepared by Regional Development Australia Townsville and North West Queensland (RDA) to promote the pipeline of civil and commercial construction projects in Townsville. RDA accepts no liability or responsibility whatsoever for or in respect of any use of or reliance upon this report.

Information about construction projects are available from many sources including construction related peak body organisations, government and economic development agencies, your local government authority, chambers of commerce, news and journal articles. It is also recognised that being informed about project tender and procurement information in a timely manner is vital for construction companies to maintain a competitive edge. Through this project we hope to facilitate better access to information about construction projects, procurement and tenders processes, as well as encourage working collaboratively with employment and training providers to meet employment and resourcing needs for the sector.
